Ελληνική Πρεμιέρα/Greek Premiere
Μυθοπλασία/Fiction, Πορτογαλία/Portugal, 1963, 21 ́ 35mm, α/μ/b&w, Πορτογαλικά/Portuguese

This allegorical short was inspired by a news item about the rescue operation of two boys, who were part of a hunting party and ended up in a marshland. The rescuers, in the film, quarrel with each other and forget why they are there. It’s a sarcastic parable on Portuguese fascism. Indeed, the film was censored as too pessimistic and was allowed to be released with an optimistic ending. After the fall of the junta, prints of the film include both versions of the ending.

When, in 2001, Oliveira was asked, to make a film about his birthplace, Porto, he seized the opportunity, but encountered the problem of the city being renovated. Converting the limitation to his advantage, he resorted to his childhood memories. In his words: “I regard the film as a documentary, but to avoid it getting bogged down in a kind of photo album, I sometimes had to reconstruct things. What remains are memories of a kind of life and of images of a time long gone, that eventually do not form an autobiography, even though they do involve me”.

Μυθοπλασία/Fiction, Γαλλία/France, 1955, 86 ́ DCP, α/μ/b&w

Shot entirely on the set of a flight of steps winding upwards through a poor neighbourhood, the film tells the misadventures of a blind beggar and his daughter, who is a washerwoman and does all the housework. Her companion is a rotter and lives off her and the blind man’s hand-out box. When the box is stolen for the second time, events take a dramatic turn. De Oliveira described the film as a portrait of humanness, introduced via a group of poor and marginal people.

The first part of De Oliveira’s Tetralogy of Frustrated Love is a black comedy. Vanda remarries after her husband Ricardo dies in an accident. Soon after, she is bored of her new husband, Firmino, longing for Ricardo, whom she despised, when he was still alive. When Firmino also dies, Ricardo’s twin brother appears, stories are brought to light, and Vanda finds herself married again. Her marriage however is overshadowed again, by her memories of her happy days with Firmino.

De Oliveira’s original intention was to make an ethnographic documentary about the re-creative ritual of the Passion of Christ, by the local community of Curalha, in Portugal. That is a distinctive local tradition, rooted in the 16th-century, in which the words are chanted. In fact, it is De Oliveira second fiction film, in which the devout and self-reflective documentation gives way to a beautifully audacious and uncompromisingly modern directing style.

Based on a true story, the film shows the love adventures of the writer Camilo and his friend José-Augusto, who fall in love with two sisters. Even though José-Augusto prefers Maria, he marries Fanny. The characters eventually fall victim of their own beliefs. In this last part of the Tetralogy of Frustrated Love, De Oliveira demonstrates his virtuosity in long shots, in positioning and moving the camera, as well as incredible precision regarding the use of music.

In the twilight of colonialism in 1974, in the Portuguese African colony of Angola, some soldiers reflect on the meaning of homeland and on “the vain glory of command”. Through their memories, the main episodes of the history of Portugal are depicted. De Oliveira gives a fascinating fictional as well as real history-lesson about Portugal’s downfall. The gloomy anti-war message of the film is that wars result only in more futility and empires only leave ruins.

Μυθοπλασία/Fiction, Πορτογαλία/Portugal, 1978, 252 ́, 35mm, Έγχρ./Color Πορτογαλικά/Portuguese

In this tragic love story, set at the end of the 18th century, Simão and Teresa have to remain apart, because their families are hostile to each other. The two young lovers come to ruin for their forbidden mutual attraction. For the third part of his Tetralogy of Frustrated Love, De Oliveira closely adapted the novel, under the same title, by Camilo Castelo Branco. He was criticised of wantonly producing the most expensive Portuguese film made with public subsidy, at a time of serious financial crisis.

This first feature film of De Oliveira, a forerunner to Italian neorealism, features the story of a group of children in a poor neighborhood of Oporto. Aniki-Bόbό refers to the magic word that distinguishes police from thiefs. The leading Eduardinho has affection for Teresinha, who begins noticing the interest of a shy boy named Carlitos. When the game gets serious, the children face the consequences. The film was a commercial failure on its initial release, but today it is regarded as a classic work of Portuguese cinema.
