In this second collaboration with Salvador Dali, after the Un Chien Andalou, Buñuel provoked an even bigger scandal than the previous time. Jesus Christ and ancient Rome, bishops, governors, ministers and the bourgeoisie, the same time they are corrupted they impede an amor fou. Even though it is not based so much of filmic experimentations, and in some ways it is in dialogue with Cecil De Mill’s historical dramas, the film, even today, defies every genre and convention, every civil and moral law. Under the influence of De Sade, Buñuel passed down to us a subversive surrealist film on the instincts of sex and death.

Luis Buñuel // The Spanish director Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) is considered the father of surrealist cinema. However he directed experimental film, documentary, melodrama, satire, musical, erotica, comedy, romance, costume drama, fantasy, crime film, adventure, and western. Despite the fact that the surrealist element is always there, all of his films stand out for their distinct Bunuelian style.

Wyatt and Bill, played by co-scriptwriter Peter Fonda and by the director of the film Dennis Hopper accordingly, after transporting drugs, they decide to ride further their chopper motorbikes and travel cross country. They meet the decadent lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), and hippies seeking alternative ways of life. They also experience the bigotry and hatred from the inhabitants of small-town America. It’s a landmark film, at the threshold of independent New Hollywood, in which the decadence of the ‘American Dream’ is rendered with sex drugs and rock n roll. While it was a low-budget film, it cashed millions, probably due to the uncensored representation of the counter-culture of the 1960s.

Dennis Hopper// Dennis Hopper, film actor, director, and writer, with Easy Rider, rose to fame as a counter-cultural icon. However, his substance abuse overshadowed his creativity. By the mid-1980s, having overcome his addictions, Hopper attained additional renown for his photography and his paintings.

Once upon a time, Totò, a young man, raised in an oprphanage, looks for work in Milan. There he organises himself, and along with other homeless they make a shantytown in a vacant lot. When they discover oil, the poor devils are confronted with the land-owner and the forces of law and order. They then invoke a miracle and strive to make it happen. Vittorio De Sica, based on the novel Totò il buono by Cesare Zavattini, created a lyrical and comical neorealist film, the story of which draws elements both from reality and fantasy, a post-war fairytale with political dimesions.

Vittorio De Sica // Vittorio De Sica (1902) was a major figure in the Italian Neorealist movement. During a prolific career that spanned 55 years, De Sica directed 35 films and acted in more than 150. Along with his devotion to cinema, he also liked to gamble. He died in debt in Paris in 1974.

The tramp finds refuge in a circus, because the police are after him as a pickpocket. He rushes into the circus ring, to the delight of the audience, and the circus-proprietor immediately hires him as a clown. The tramp falls in love with the beautiful bareback rider,the daughter of the proprietor, but the girl falls in love with a rival who is an acrobat. The two marry but return to the circus forcing the proprietor to hire the tramp again. Among the many comic scenes, memorable is the one, where the tramp gets in a lion’s cage. It was one of the most difficult and laborious scene to shoot in Charlie Chaplin’s career, as it was shot more than 200 times.

Charlie Chaplin // Charlie Chaplin, comic-actor, director, producer and music composer, is considered one of the most important figures of the silent era of cinema. He resisted the oligopoly of Hollywood’s studio system, when in 1919 he co-founded the distribution company United Artists, which gave him complete control over his films.
