At the time of shooting, Chantal Akerman was 24-years-old and the film is a wonderfully blatant work of autobiography. The progress of this film’s narrative is clearly heralded by its title. The “I” is a young woman, a willing prisoner in a bedroom. The presence of time dramatizes this enclosure in relation to solitude and solitude’s impossibility. The “you” is the writing, of letters and texts. The “he” is a lorry-driver who talks of his relationship to women. Finally, “she”, a girlfriend who at first refuses the recluse and at last invites her into bed.

Merlyn has been pacifying the Balkans, turning tricks with countless Serbian guys. Merlyn is a lighting rod sheltering Belgrade, calming violent nighthawks, swanky big spenders, miserable loners and horny young studs, taking on the charge that would otherwise befall little girls, unprotected mothers and helpless old women. Combined with guns, this unbridled energy would eventually lead to bloodshed. Merlyn cools the boiling blood of violent Dinarides and enriches it with love. This film is a treatise on the different methods of resolving conflicts, resorted to by Merlyn and Johnny.

Anders als die Andern is probably the first gay-themed film in the history of cinema. It was created by the director and screenwriter Richard Oswald and the psychologist Dr Magnus Hirschfeld, with the goal of liberating homosexuals from public discrimination and legal persecution. [...] The film was released in Germany in 1919, at a time when there was no film censorship. [...] Rightwing conservative and nationalist circles used the film as a reason to advance the re-introduction of censorship. [...]. Censorship was re-established in 1920 and the film was banned immediately [...] The incomplete version that exists today is one of the jewels of silent filmmaking (Karl Wratschko).

In the words of Maria Klonari (1983): “The portrait approached as a privileged moment of encounter between two subjects: the one that films and the one that is filmed. In front of my camera Parvaneh Navai acts as a mediator who comes in contact with the energies of nature and lets them penetrate her, at the same time as her own inner energy radiates and resounds in the forest (“selva” in Italian). The camera amplifies and extends its presence by transforming the forest into an imaginary space. The camera becomes a paintbrush. Trances-dances, out of body-projection”.
