Πειραματικό/Experimental, Διευρυμένος κινηματογράφος/Expanded

cinema, Ελλάδα/Greece, 1975, 97 ́, 35mm, Έγχρ./Color, Με ήχο/Sound

In Vio-grafia—with the pioneering use of the rostrum camera, editing and color—the gravures of Chumy Chumez, provide a basis on which a narrative commentary and music are poetically correlated. A confession of the historical and mythic subject of our era and world is reconstituted, of a world which is dominated both by the spectacle and the audiovisual. The film introduced to Greece expanded cinema, since in itself it takes the form of a Lamposcope projection—a kind of a projector of painted glass slides from the 19th century—and with the simultaneous use of a unique frame, of 1:2.75 dimensions.

This experimental film is about the representation and alternative views related to metaphors for the passage of time, while also functioning as a study on the origin and nature of images. The visual syntheses are assembled with the voices of the woman that gives birth and dies, and is torn by the conflicts inhabiting her body. According to Angelidi, a pioneer of anti-patriarchal poetic cinema: “The film presents an expanded moment. An in-between moment, where memories flow simultaneously, and their consistency has the arbitrariness and exactness of the sequence of a dream. The entire film is a filmed dream”.

Fragments of personal experiences. A notebook of memories. Family photographs, from texts abandoned which I kept. Relics. Heirlooms. Sailing to Aegina -the first images, the sea, clutching the book of verses En Leuko. “It’s the girl” the poet talks about “with a jug in her hand”. Milta or the Archetype. It’s ‘Milta’, the women of the Mediterranean, it’s the ‘Milta’ of the sea, of memory and of poetry. Predominantly the poetry of the word, but also of the image. So I surrendered myself to my memories, to the house, to the book, to the street. Summer— it was hot, as The Garden Entered the Sea. The time has come to offer them to you, like Water on the table. (Vouvoula Skoura, 2010)

Μυθοπλασία/Fiction, Ελλάδα/Greece, 1956, 107 ́ 35mm, α/μ/b&w, Με ήχο/sound

After his first neorealist film Magic City (1954), Koundouros brings to Greece the auteur cinema, which as Aglaia Mitropoulou notes, is about the ability to “work outside commercialized production and develop a personal expression”. The film based on the deadly impersonation of a timid civil servant to big shot of the Athenian underworld, articulates the tradition of Greek rembetiko with rebellion, which in the case of post-civil war Greece, hinted to an oppositional public sphere.

Πειραματικό/Experimental, Ελλάδα/Greece, 1974, 90′, 35mm, Έγχρ./Color, Χωρίς ήχo/Silent

According to the philosopher and his close friend Savvas Michail, Sfikas has realized Eisenstein’s dream to film Marx’s Capital: “The Model however is not the case that a subject-content is cinematically covered with external veils. There is the revelation of content. The singular shot of the film becomes the microcosm, the molecular form of capitalism, with its driving contradictions”. Weaved with the form of cinematic time, Sfikas, illustrates, without didacticism and metaphysics, that it is our own personal time that has become alienated and thus transformed to “the law of value” that Marx discovered.
