A dark Acropolis in the opening credits; we then enter the troubled insides of a bourgeois home. Fifty years before Strella, Chloe (Ellie Lambeti),equally Lives her myth in Greece. Everything here (class, gender, kinship,desire, dignity) is introduced as a matter of performance. The family, meanwhile, becomes the context in which to show an old world that is dying, while the new is still only experienced as suffocation.

As in the later Angelopoulos films happens with history, here it is the family that becomes the site to hide a dead body. The reconstruction of the crime, and alongside it, the film, thus become an excavation in progress. The cyclical ending of Reconstruction, with the children playing hide and seek, reminds Angelopoulos’s other films (eg. Travelling Players); it also eerily anticipates a similar scene, forty years later, with the children of Dogtooth.

Stergios celebrates his birthday, in a delirium; shouting at his mother, criss-crossing Thessaloniki, trying to tell his cousin he loves her and then abducting her to a destroyed family cottage. At the same time all the members of his extended family are seen negotiating similar tensions, in the present and in the past, as does the country itself, paralyzed by general strikes and demonstrations. This is a film where all sorts of archives are in trouble. And where kinship and nation are presented not just as reflections of one another; they are also pressure machines, an instant before explosion.
