The film is an adaptation of the novel, with the same title, by Augustina Bessa-Luis, which in turn is a Portuguese version of Flaubert’s masterpiece Madame Bovary. It is shot on location in the northern wine district of the river Douro. De Oliveira portrays the narrow-minded provincialism against Ema’s sexual freedom. Ema, played by Leonor Silveira, is a woman of stunning beauty, who feels trapped in her marriage and craves for love and luxury.
