This first feature film of De Oliveira, a forerunner to Italian neorealism, features the story of a group of children in a poor neighborhood of Oporto. Aniki-Bόbό refers to the magic word that distinguishes police from thiefs. The leading Eduardinho has affection for Teresinha, who begins noticing the interest of a shy boy named Carlitos. When the game gets serious, the children face the consequences. The film was a commercial failure on its initial release, but today it is regarded as a classic work of Portuguese cinema.
