In this tragic love story, set at the end of the 18th century, Simão and Teresa have to remain apart, because their families are hostile to each other. The two young lovers come to ruin for their forbidden mutual attraction. For the third part of his Tetralogy of Frustrated Love, De Oliveira closely adapted the novel, under the same title, by Camilo Castelo Branco. He was criticised of wantonly producing the most expensive Portuguese film made with public subsidy, at a time of serious financial crisis.
