In the twilight of colonialism in 1974, in the Portuguese African colony of Angola, some soldiers reflect on the meaning of homeland and on “the vain glory of command”. Through their memories, the main episodes of the history of Portugal are depicted. De Oliveira gives a fascinating fictional as well as real history-lesson about Portugal’s downfall. The gloomy anti-war message of the film is that wars result only in more futility and empires only leave ruins.
