Franco Elica is a film director, who is attempting a remake of Alessandro Manzoni’s novel The Betrothed, a landmark in Italian literature. From the problems during the production, Bellocchio makes a heartfelt critique of the state of the Italian movie industry. Moreover, Ernesto is troubled by his daughter’s marriage with a devout Catholic. In Sicily, where he has fled, he meets a wedding director and a nobleman. The wedding of the nobleman’s daughter will turn out eventful.
