In the film, also in an autobiographical vein, Marcello Mastroianni, in his last performance, plays Manoel, a senior Portuguese film director, who, along with actor friends, is shooting on location in the places of his youth. Manoel’s leading man, Alfonso remembers his long gone dead father and his origin from a hardscrabble village nearby. They decide to visit the village, and Alfonso’s reunion with his aunt is combined with Manoel’s memories of his childhood in this particular part of northern Portugal…
